The Art of Diversity
For the Week of May 26 - May 29 "the Art of Diversity" sculpture will be on display at the Welcome Centre.
This year, the Welcome Centre celebrated the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination with an Anti-Racism Youth Leadership Workshop held on March 19 and 20. The first day was a facilitators training workshop attended by 10 volunteers. On hand to train the facilitators was Rhonda Rosenberg, Executive Director of the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan. The second day was open to high school students. There were 5 schools under the Chinook School Division that sent students and school staff to the workshop. There was a total of 48 students, 4 teachers, 2 principals, and 10 facilitators that completed the workshop participants. It was a day of learning, sharing experiences and meeting new friends. Some comments from the students include:
"I learned just how much racism and bullying there is in our world. (and) How Much one smile can make someone's life better."
"I thought that this workshop would be a lot of lecture...but I actually had fun!. I also met a lot of new people which is really good."
"Even small actions can make a huge impact"
We would like to thank MCoS for helping us fund this project. We would also like to thank Boston Pizza and SIGA for their support.
We partnered with the Art Gallery of Swift Current for one of the activities done during the event. Kim Houghtaling, Director and Curator of the Art Gallery, joined us for this activity.
